Welcome to Your Freedom!
Experience open skies, unspoiled wetlands, and history so close you can touch it. Nestled in the northwest corner of Alberta, the Mackenzie Frontier offers visitors a firsthand experience of frontier life in the 21st century.
Straddling the Mackenzie Highway, High Level is the hospitality, retail, and transportation hub for the Mackenzie Frontier. Stay in comfort in one of the community’s many hotel and motel properties or get close to nature and sleep under the midnight sun in one of the local campgrounds. Visit the Farmer’s Market every Friday throughout the summer months or time your visit with one of the region’s rodeos or community events. Take advantage of the long summer days to play a lazy round of golf at one of four unique courses!
Taste the old-fashioned, down home cooking and baking on offer in La Crete while admiring the fertile farmland that surrounds the picturesque community. Learn about the unique Mennonite history of the hamlet while visiting the La Crete Heritage Center. Take a tour of the Heritage Village, populated with the homes and equipment that once belonged to early pioneers and homesteaders.
Travel back in time with a stop in Fort Vermilion, the oldest community in Alberta – established by the North West Company in 1786 as a fur trading center. History and beauty abound in the quiet little village on the banks of the mighty Peace River.
In contrast Rainbow Lake is a bustling little town with great fishing in quiet coves and uninterrupted water skiing beckoning on their 12 kilometer long namesake lake. Whether you stay overnight or just enjoy a day, don’t miss a photo op with a giant mosquito created from a modified pumpjack!
Zama City is literally carved out of the boreal forest, a tiny cluster of homes and businesses surrounded by vast wilderness. Locals enjoy many off-roading activities, such as ATV and snowmobile riding… however the fall mud bog circuit is a not to be missed event for those into all things motor sport.
